The Black Breastfeeding Movement
Why Breastfeed?
High Black Infant Mortality Rate – Having the highest mortality rate in the country, breastfeeding can reduce the mortality rate of African-American babies.
High rates of diet-related disease – Breast milk is an infant’s first food and is the most complete. It is nature’s best preventative medicine for potential disease in life.
African Americans need to rewrite their story– To cultivate the culture away from the wet nurse stigma and instead create a caring and nurturing stigma for black babies from day one. “Black Babies Lives Matter”
Diversity in the lactation field – African Americans need representation during the movement to promote world breastfeeding for all babies.
Closing the gaps– There is a need for accessible community breast milk banks for African American mothers for donations, supports, and assistance.
